Characters, words and bytes
The counter shows characters with and without spaces, words, UTF-8 bytes and how far you are over the limit. Characters are counted by Unicode code point, so most emojis count as one character.
Bytes matter for databases and some forms. In UTF-8 an English letter takes 1 byte, a Korean syllable takes 3 and many emojis take 4, so the same number of characters can use very different amounts of space.
