dBFS, not dB SPL
Browsers give the microphone signal as digital levels (dBFS), where 0 is the loudest the device can record. A phone microphone is not calibrated, so this cannot give official noise levels in dB SPL. It is useful for comparing before and after on the same device.
Frequently asked questions
Is the audio recorded?
No, only the level is computed and nothing is saved.
Why are the numbers negative?
dBFS counts down from the maximum level, 0 dBFS.
Why does it need HTTPS?
Browsers allow microphone access only on secure pages.
